Goodwater, Alabama
is a small town located in Coosa County in the east-central portion of the state. It lies in the upper northeast corner of the county, just a few miles northwest of Alexander City. The county of Coosa was named for the Coosa River, which forms the western boundary of the county. It is bordered by Shelby, Talladega, Clay, Tallapoosa, Elmore and Chilton counties. The town of Goodwater is the largest community in Coosa County – by size and population. According to the United States Census Bureau, Goodwater has a total area of 6.5 square miles and a population of approximately 5,000 residents. The entire population of Coosa County is only about 12,000 residents, which gives you an idea of the rural nature of the area. The county seat of Coosa County is the tiny town of Rockford, population 500. A very historical area, Coosa County was created in 1832 from lands ceded in the Creek Indian Treaty of Cusseta and also from parts of Montgomery County. Explorer Hernando DeSoto was probably the first white man to visit what is now the area of Goodwater and Coosa County. Professional basketball player, Jamario Moon, (currently playing for the NBA's Toronto Raptors,) is from Goodwater, Alabama.
Places of interest near Goodwater include Hatchet Creek, which is known for its beds of Cahaba Lilies, the Old Rock Jail in Rockford and the Oakachoy Covered Bridge. It is also near Lake Martin, which is one of the largest artificial lakes in the United States. Lake Martin is located within Coosa, Tallapoosa and Elmore Counties. It is a 44,000 acre lake with over 750 miles of wooded shoreline. It was formed after completion of Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River. Upon its' completion in 1926, Lake Martin was then the largest man-made lake in the entire world. The lake is a popular recreational lake for swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, camping and more. There are many fishing tournaments at Lake Martin throughout the year, and a huge Fourth of July fireworks show every year. Many luxurious homes and waterfront communities are are located along Lake Martin. There are also several beautiful parks located in the Goodwater area, including Wind Creek State Park, which offers picnicking, camping, hiking trails, swimming and boating.
Goodwater is a short drive to Alexander City (Tallapoosa County,) known to locals as “Alex City.” Here you will find great restaurants and shopping of every kind – from antiques to mass retailers. Downtown Alexander City is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The whole east-central portion of Alabama is filled with breathtaking scenery. Peaceful woodlands and lovely lakes, small towns and friendly people, as well as a wide range of recreational and social opportunities like golf, tennis and bowling, small town fairs and festivals. The town of Goodwater is approximately 49 miles north of Montgomery, Alabama and close to Birmingham and Atlanta. It is about a three-hour drive to the beaches of south Alabama and the Florida Panhandle and two hours from the mountains of Tennessee.
